Cold Calling by Mail, Telephone or in Person
Friday, June 20, 2014Today on Lets Get Working I would like to unpack Cold Calling a bit further. Cold Calling is when you approach a business in person or on the phone without any insider help.
There are three methods of Cold Calling.
1. Send out your Resume with a Cover Letter to a bunch of businesses without contacting them to find out the name of the hiring person. This way of doing things to get yourself a job may look like you are doing a lot of work but most envelopes that are not addressed to a specific person usually end up in the round file, know as ‘the bin’!
2. You can call the business, ask for the name of the hiring person, making sure you spell their name correctly, and if you are feel brave enough, ask to speak to them. Make sure you are not in you pyjamas when you ring, you are in a quiet place without distractions and that you have a smile on your face when you speak.
Once you have the name of the miring person, send them your Resume and Cover Letter, or follow up on what you discussed with the hiring person when you spoke with them.
3. If you decide to go to the business in person, make sure you are dressed well, as if you are attending an interview. Have copies of your resume to leave with the receptionist or the hiring person, if you can ask and get to speak to them. Take your portfolio with you, just in case they ask to see it.
In summary, Cold Calling in person or by telephone can be nerve wrecking, but you never know what’s out there. Have a smile on your face when speaking on the phone or in person. See Cold Calling as a challenge and an adventure! Remember, every ‘NO’ is one step closer to a ‘YES’!
Until next time,
Enjoy the journey!
Martha!
