Cold calling
Friday, August 2, 2013Hi everyone. Today I want to tell you about the benefits of cold calling and why you should have a go at the various different ways you can cold call.
Cold calling is calling, visiting or sending your resume along with a cover letter to a business you have not had contact with before. You do not know anyone that works there and so you go in person, via phone or letter and introduce yourself to them. Tell them what you can do for their company and why they should hire you.
With any luck they may have a position waiting just for you to fill that they have not advertised yet.
After all, 80% of jobs are not advertised! You may save them a lot of time if they don’t have to advertise and go through interview after interview to find the right person.
How might you put a list of businesses together?
Look in the:
Yellow Pages,True LocalDrive around and put a list togetherLocal newspapersGoogle...In person:
Be well presented
Have a copy of your resume prepared to give to the person you speak to
Ask to speak to the hiring person
Smile and plan what you are going to say.
On the phone:
Have a script:
“Hi my is...
I would like to speak to the HR manager/owner
Tell them about your qualifications and how you can help them...”
Ask if you can send them your resume.
Ask for a name so you can address the cover letter and envelope to them.
Bulk mail out:
Ring each business to get the name of the hiring person and the postal address.
Address each cover letter.
Write the envelopes by hand.
Follow up by ringing to see if you can set up a meeting 3 days after posting the letter.
Until next time,
Enjoy the journey!
Martha!
