Interview with Cath from Cath's Cakes
Friday, November 23, 2012Today on Lets Get Working I am interviewing Cath from Cath’s Cakes.
What is your title?
Cath is a Chef by trade, having done a 4 year apprenticeship, went into restaurant work, had kids, looked at buying her own business. Cath’s passion has always been in cakes and so she bought Cath’s Cakes.
Why are you passionate about cakes?
Everyone loves cakes, you can be creative, variety.
What kinds of workers do you employ?
Apprenticeship as a baker/pastry chef – 3 years apprenticeship
At TAFE you learn the basics - pastries, breads, fillings, Occupational Health & Safety, food standards, hygiene
In the shop it is very hands on, baking, custards, fillings, creams, sauces, decorating and cleaning.
What characteristics do you look for when employing people?
Look for hard working, bright personality, happy team work, reliability, turn up on time, putting in 100%, honesty and willing to learn
Do you have tips for someone who wants to be a pastry chef?
Practise at home, take photos of what you make, develop the photos into a portfolio and experiment – look up ideas on the internet.
If you are looking at becoming an apprentice...
Hand in your Resume in person - this is the best way. Speak to manager, show that you are keen, take in your portfolio and show your passion and drive.
Do you have any special interview questions?
No real special interview questions – just show your willingness to learn and let your character shine through.
