Jodie's Can Do Ability

Welcome again to Let’s Get Working, today I am talking to Nova Employment's Disability Social Facilitator, Jodie, about her experience on finding work.
What has been your experience in looking for work?
Jodie started looking for work 8 years ago. It was difficult as no one wanted someone in a wheelchair. It was upsetting as Jodie was not given a 'fair go'.
When applying for a job, Jodie doesn't always tell people she is in a wheelchair, so they judge her on her skills, not her disability.
Jodie got an interview at a mechanics and when she inquired if there were any stairs, the employer asked 'why?' Jodie replied that she used a wheelchair. The employer said that it would not be a good place for Jodie to work. Jodie was upset and let it go.
If that scenario were to happen now, Jodie would have taken him to court for discrimination as he judged what Jodie couldn't do without meeting her. Perhaps minor adjustments may have been able to be made and she could have worked there.
Jodie has also had some good experiences - Jodie has gotten jobs she has really wanted and proved herself. Jodie can work just like anybody else.
